[ltp] IBM ThinkPad R30

Hi all,

I saw what looks like a very useful summary of first experiences
with a tp R30 on a wireless list I read. I felt it deserved an
airing (and an archiving) on this list, so with Larry's
permission, here it is. The references to wireless drivers are to
the linux-wlan-ng project which is developing drivers for cards
based on the Intersil Prism2 chipset. Larry has since got irda
working.

Michael.

Hi, all,

List newbie here. I thought I'd share my config on my week-old
IBM ThinkPad R30 2656-A1U:

    - I run linux kernel 2.4.16; others may work
    - linux-wlan-ng-0.1.10 works, using the prism2_pci module
    - wlan-ng apparently requires "# CONFIG_MODVERSIONS is not
      set" in /usr/src/linux/.config
	- I couldn't get the p80211 module to insert without
	  turning off CONFIG_MODVERSIONS
	- I welcome correction on this issue :)
    - the 'pump' dhcp client will talk to the wlan0 port

    - on non-wireless fronts:
	- CONFIG_EEPRO100=y for the built-in wired Ethernet
	- I can't find my IrDA port and don't think the R30 (or
at least *my* R30) actually has one, contrary to IBM's
	  documentation
	    - I welcome correction on this issue, too :)
	- CONFIG_SOUND_TRIDENT=[y/m] for sound support
	- the tpctl ("ThinkPad Control") package doesn't seem to
	  work
	    - I don't think the R30 has SMAPI, which tpctl
	      assumes
	- I haven't yet figured out how to talk to the built-in
	  modem
	    - I suspect it's a winmodem
	    - I further suspect that it's a Lucent AMR Soft
	      Modem, which linmodems.org says AREN'T supported :(
	    - I tried mwave, and can't get it to work, either
		- I think this also follows from lack of SMAPI
	- haven't tried anything USB yet
	- X works at 1027x768 24bpp
	    - "XFree86 -configure"
	    - add "HorizSync 28-49" under section Monitor
	    - add "DefaultDepth 24" under section Screen

Thanks! Comments/questions/corrections welcome.
