I'm running a Thinkpad 770E - which is the same, except yours is a P1
and mine is a PII. Probably one or two other small differences... In
any case my girlfriend owned a 770 for a few months (before she
upgraded it to a 770Z.)

I don't know if there is an upgrade path. Best bet is to put the 7.x
CD into the drive (and boot from it) and see if you get the option to
upgrade. Now, if you haven't done anything to it it's probably
easiest to do a fresh install.

I would also recommend (if you can) to install RH 7.2 - which is the
latest. The only major difference you'll notice is the addition of
the ext3 filesystem - which might make a difference when you have an
unexpected reboot. The journalled filesystems (such as ext3) are much
nicer. Be warned there are also about 100 Megs or so of updates for
7.2 (and more for 7.1) and you'll want to install them for security
reasons.

I hope that helps.
