Iam having the same problem on my thinkpad 600e.
Iam runing redhat 7.0
tpctl sayz port1 is enabled
when i connect a serial cable and try to read from the other side, i see no
output.
windows seems to work fine. I need this very bad to use my laptop as a
source level debugger
for kernel debugging, and have had no luck so far.

Try 'setserial /dev/ttyS0 port 0x3f8 irq 4 uart 16550A'. Debian 2.2 saves
the
state of the serial ports and reloads it at the next reboot so you should
have to do this only once.
