[ltp] slow, boiling hot 770

I bought my 770 in October and have been reading this list with interest
since then. My query relates to a slowing down of the machine that
happens most of the time: things go at about 50 percent without anything
showing in top.
If I sync every second I thrash the disc and get some improvement. With
this and a data CD in the drive I get nearly full speed:
{ while true; do dd if=/dev/cdrom count=1 of=/dev/null >dev/null 2>&1; done } &
(it's not about keeping the spindles turning, if you were wondering.)
This also suppresses a whistle on the speakers. Does anyone have a clue
what the Thinkpad might be doing every 125us and how I can stop it?
Also, the fan only ever runs during the POST or in the Test menu of
EZSetup. Is it in fact running cool, or is it OS specific (I'm single booting
RH6.2), or have I got a broken thermostat? Any instructions on how to turn
it on manually would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Greg
