[ltp] 240 video slowness

so, here's the deal.  the video output seems to be terribly slow on this
machine.   like for web browsing, or anything with a scroll bar
basicaly...  if you try and scroll, it takes forever... because it's
seeming to choke on redrawing the screen that fast.  like i can see it
scan down.

currently running xfree 4.03, has anyone else had these problems?  

because a friend of mine has a thinkpad 240x with the exact same video
card, and he's using xfree 3.3.6 and it's fast and he's got no complaints
about it.    does x4 just stink for the NM2160 chipset, or is there some
configuration i should know about.
