Without the external monitor plugged in you should run "X -configure".
This will create a file in root's home directory called "XF86Config.new".

Then run "X -xf86config $HOME/XF86Config.new". This should bring up a
screen on the LCD at 1024x768. CTRL-ALT-BackSpace will kill X and give you
back your prompt.

You can edit this file to change some settings.

Some of the things I change are:
o make sure both "intern_disp" and "extern_disp" options are uncommented
under the "Device" section. (to enable both LCD and external display
     at the same time)
o add "DefaultDepth 16" to the "Screen" section. (gives most colors
without
     disabling hardware accel.)

Copy the "XF86Config.new" file to "/etc/X11/XF86Config".

Once you have X running you can switch internal an external displays via
Fn+F7 key combo. If you have both "intern_disp" and "extern_disp" options
enabled the you will be able to have simualtanious displays going.

***Do not use xf86config (don't know about Xconfigurator) as it produces
***an XF86Config file for XFree86 Version 3 (not 4)
