Hmm, this is really strange. Right now, I use my machine in the office,
docked in the port replicator with an IBM Token Ring PCMCIA card and
active network connection. Closing the lid (and working with external
screen/mouse/keyboard) or pressing <Fn><F3> works without problems, i.e.
I see no such messages.
FWIW, here are my HD's settings (output of "hdparm -vi /dev/hda"):
