[ltp] Seriously strange sound problem

If I play an mp3 (with mpg123 for example, but it makes no difference
which player I use) while my thinkpad A20p is plugged into its port
replicator, I get no sound and the entire mp3 plays in about 10 seconds.

If the thinkpad is not plugged into the port replicator, mp3s play fine.

In either case, I still get the sounds from KDE and using aplay to play
the KDE startup sound also works find when on the port replicator.

Help! I don't understand!
