Hello linux-thinkpad,
I've got a 770ED that dual boots between Win98SE and RedHat 6.2. My RH
install is fairly vanilla. A week or so ago, I downloaded and
installed the latest PCMCIA package, thinking that it might help solve
my problem.
When the 770ED is sitting by itself on a desktop, everything seems to
be working fine. I have a 3Com/Megahertz combo modem/ethernet PCMCIA
card in the main system that works fine, whether in Win98SE or RH.
When the 770ED is docked on its Dock III, things get weird. The dock
contains my floppy drive and IDE CD-RW drive. Both of these work fine
under Win98SE and RH, though I have not yet tried to burn a CD under
RH. There is no PCMCIA card in the Dock's slots. There is no card in
the Dock's card cage. There is nothing powered up on the Dock's SCSI
bus.
Booting the 770ED on the Dock into Win98SE works fine (as much as any
Win boot works fine). Often, booting on the Dock into RH 6.2 also
works fine (although I haven't yet figured out how to make it
recognize the SCSI interface).
On rare occasions, RH 6.2 comes up and is usable, but the modem/net
card is not recognized as such, even after removal and re-insertion.
Sometimes, frequently enough to be really annoying, booting into RH
6.2 gets to the point of starting the PCMCIA Card Manager and totally
locks up the system. I know that this is where it is happening,
because I stuck additional output lines into the pcmcia init script
and checked the logs. It seems that putting several seconds of delay
both before and after the Card Manager start has reduced the frequency
of this happening, but it is still something like 1 in 6-8 boots.
Help!!!???!!!
Ron.
