Subject: Re: [ltp] Suse 7.1
I've had Suse 7.1 running on my TP240 for a few weeks without any glitches,
UNTIL today when I was configuring an Internet connection for a 3Com PCMCIA
modem. What occurred might fall under the category of a recent thread here
about someone's TP BITING THE DUST, though I hope not. I erased the
messages
of that thread and don't remember the program or feature of Linux to which
it referred, but hope someone can tell me if my problem - that at present
my
240 is certainly dead -is related.
All I know is that after configuring an Internet connection, choosing
"enable firewall", and activating the connection, the modem dialed in and
attempted to connect, but couldn't. A few of the messages that I saw in the
script received from the ISP included one after the login which said "don't
know what to do", one saying "attempting PPP connection, hope this works",
and finally one that "PPP could not be initiated". Then, within maybe 30
seconds after this, the machine lost power, although the power-on LED was
still on. Pressing the power switch did not start a reboot. When I called
IBM, the tech had me remove battery and AC and perform the paper clip
reset.
But it still won't power on, either on battery (which is new) or AC power,
and no LED's light up. So now it's off to IBM repair, with my fingers
crossed that this is a serviceable problem and one that they won't refuse
to
cover with the excuse "original installation not present".
Does anyone have any ideas on this mystery and if it may be related to the
previous thread on TP sudden death?
