The location it's not important as far as you don't overwrite anything.
My rule is to put that kind of packages under /home/root
Have in mind that this is a process that you are going to 
do with more software, most probably. So choose a location and
always use the same (just an advice).

I don't remember the doc. But /etc/rc.d/init.d is where the provided
script must be, initialy it's under mwavem-20010315 directory and
if the install process don't copy it to /etc/rc.d/init.d  you can do it
by yourself. Then you must add the apropiate links to the rcX.d directories.

By the way, have you made "make install"?

If it's not that you didn't run "make install" I'm afraid I
wouldn't be able to help there, my model (TP600) worked
without problems.

Anyway, you shoul always include the exact error message
in these questions, not just "it fails"  :)
