Make a symlink from /usr/src/linux to the appropriate kernel source
against which you wish to compile things, it'll make your life easier.

What are the contents of your /proc/isapnp? /proc/interrupts? lspci?
Are you sure you've compiled support for the right chipset? Also I'd
advise going to at least kernel 2.4.3 soon, as 2.4.2 had fs corruption
problems [it did for me anyway] which went away w. 2.4.3. I believe 2.4.5
is the current 2.4.x version.
