Some progress, I went to http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/ and downloaded this version of XFree86, 
Xinstall -check said 
Checking which OS you're running...
uname reports 'Linux' version '2.2.16-22', architecture 'i686'.
Object format is 'ELF'.  libc version is '6.1.92' (6.2).

Binary distribution name is 'Linux-ix86-glibc22'

So I downloaded the glibc22 version, ran the install, cd to /etc/X11, ran Xconfigurator ( XFree86 -config failed ), let it do the probe, and it now found the display and I have a graphics interface at 1024x768, not much in it at the moment, next challenge, to get KDE running.
