In my case, the external VGA o/p works perfectly if I add
Option "extern_disp"
Option "intern_disp" to my X config.
To switch between 3 modes (VGA, LCD, and VGA+LCD), I change to a terminal
with ctrl+alt+fn (n<>7) and then switch back to graphical screen.

PS : I have a tp i1300 with Trident.
