There is a page on getting Audio working for the 390 by Allin Cottrell at

http://www.ecn.wfu.edu/~cottrell/tp390e/sound.html

There are other links off there.

http://www.uglx.org/sony.html explains about Sound with the NeoMagic chipsets:

Many modern laptops use the NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV or 256ZX audio/video
chipsets, which contain a combined PCI-based soundcard and some version of
their video core. The audio portion comes in at least three different versions:
a SB-16 hardware-compatible version, an CS4232-compatible version and a
AC97-compatible version. The Sony Z505S, Z505SX, Z505DX and Z505RX, some of the
Sony F-series, the Sharp Actius PC-A800, and some Dell Latitude laptops (CPi
and CPt at least) have the AC97-compatible chipset.
