If it is a Lucent modem then the following may be of some use...
I started with http://www.linmodems.org/
You have to dig about a bit once you are there. My personal setup is a
Thinkpad 600x which has a Lucent chipset. Lucent produced a binary for the
2.2.12(?) kernel that broke fairly soon afterwards. The binary has
subsequently been hacked and packaged to work with later kernels. I
eventually got a driver hack from
http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heby/ltmodem/
I am running SuSE 7.1, kernel 2.4 and it works like a charm!
