It seems like the default 1280x1024 modes of XFree86 4.1.0.1 doesn't fit into 
the specs of your LCD or ranges for hsync. Thats why the X server ignores 
this relolution completely and uses 1024x768 instead. Since your LCD has a 
resolution of 1280x1024, you will have 128 black pixels on the left, right, 
top and bottom. You could try to raise the upper hsync limit from 60 to 80 
and see if you still see the line "(II) TRIDENT(0): Not using default mode 
1280x1024" (hsync out of range)". If this is still the case you will need to 
define a working 1280x1024 mode in your XF86Config file (or ask another 770x 
user to help you with this).
