I would guess that the problem is that the built-in trackpoint only
talks PS/2 protocol, but the external mouse talks IMPS/2 when told to.
So the input from /dev/psaux ends up being a mixture of the two, and the
X mouse driver can't handle that.

If you use a USB mouse, it will talk on /dev/input/mice, leaving only
the trackpoint on /dev/psaux, so you won't have this problem.
