I still cannot figure out how to 'reflash the firmware'? Google
invariably leads me to some Dakota firmware reflash. Do you mean
reformatting of the hard disk?

On the other hand, I started to get some time problems when in
windows (the only system usable at present). The time jumps with
several hours and then lags behind with hours. I set the time in bios
but next time I see again a different value. I am not sure if this is
connected with the linux boot problem after the bios update.

Another thought I had was about the EEPROM warning that is on your
thinkpad webpage. But I have never ever installed the 'sensors'
packages (despite all the inconsistencies complaints of suse yast
package menager), since I knew about the warning. Also, after the Bios
update I still see the system unit serial, system board serial and the
UUID, which are exactly the same as before.
