Are you on dialup or DSL?  If DSL and PPPoE, check out Roaring-Penguin:
http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/ .  Some distros include rp-pppoe....

Either way, iptables and Bastille provide good tools for building a 
firewall.
