Was your /boot or your / partion over the 8gb boundary?

If they over lap it, you can have some problems on some systems. depend on
which blocks the FS tryies to use.

I put a minimumal / partition right at the begining of a disk (never
bother with a /boot

Filesystem           1k-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root               381121     70844    290598  20% /

Its hardly wanting for space here ;-)

Putting lba32 in your /etc/lilo.conf can help too...
