I think I would include both the fuse and the reverse-polarity protection
diode (the way up that shorts the wrong-way voltage) even if I used the
cigarette lighter point. The assumption that the lighter point is installed
correctly and protected adequately may not be valid, especially if I'm not
in my own car. In fact, I often use a full-wave rectifier instead of
polarity protection and a proper regulator - it becomes even more versatile
then and can be used on 24 volt systems, too, even though there may be
voltage drop difficulties at 12v.
