Morten, I guess you meant a SuperSavage, correct?

I had this working on a T23 with a SuperSavage and 1400x1050@60Hz on the
LCD as well as 1400x1050@75Hz on the CRT (both at 16 bit depth). There's
a driver on the S3 website at https://ranger.s3graphics.com/290-298drv
(file "Savage_4.1.0_binary.tgz") which is in fact for the *Savage*
chips, not the SuperSavage, but works fine for the latter however. With
the standard Savage driver in the XFree86 distribution, I also got no
more than 60Hz on the CRT.

This was with SuSE 7.3 which has XFree86 version 4.1.0-45 on the media.
I later upgraded to 4.2.0-2 and although the S3 driver was build for
4.1.0, it still worked well.

Lately I've installed SuSE 8.0 which comes with XFree86 4.2.0-64.
Unfortunately this level didn't support the S3 driver any longer: The X
server immediately coredumped after starting it. The same happens with
the Savage driver which is developed by Tim Roberts and available at
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html . I've already sent Tim a mail
to let him know.

In order to be able to run the "good old" S3 driver again, I've
downgraded the XFree86 RPMs on my machine back to the 4.2.0-2 upgrade
level for SuSE 7.3. Works great and I can use the CRT again without
going mad because of the flicker: Happy camper.

Bottom line: Give the driver from the S3 site a try and if it doesn't
like your XFree86 version (I don't know the exact level Mandrake 8.2
comes with), try downgrading to a lower level.

HTH,
Markus
