I think it's more likely that the serial port is simply disabled.  You
can use lspnp to check, and setpnp to change.  You may need to recompile
your kernel or the pcmcia-cs package with PnP support enabled for those
commands to work.

On some Thinkpads you can also use tpctl to control the serial ports,
but on my A30p that doesn't seem to work.
