RTFM... it's in the docs that come with tpctl.  Well, actually it's
the "thinkpad" bundle (not the tpctl bundle - they're now separate
entities.)  Perhaps you only got the one and not the other?  Anyway,
it's a mknod command:

        mknod --mode=664 /dev/thinkpad c 10 170
