That is the way I understand it.  For 8.0, Red Hat modified XFree86
4.2.1 to include support for the Xft2.0 extensions that are currently in
the XFree CVS code.  Xft2.0 supports FontConfig, which is what allows
you to place fonts in ~./fonts and have them automatically recognized.

Overall, it makes X look a lot better.  On the other hand, it is causing
me nightmares when I try to compile anything from source that relies on
the Xft headers.  Many of the applications I use don't come stock with
Red Hat (like Fluxbox) or have upgrades available (Gnome) and I have
been unsuccessful getting them to compile.

It's a major factor in my current search for a new distribution.  I've
been using Red Hat exclusively since 5.x, but I am now looking at more
"hacker-friendly" distributions like SlackWare and Gentoo.
