on my 770x i have found this to be caused by feedback with the built-in
microphone. does the tone get louder (change pitch some) as you slowly
close the lid? try turning down the volume on the built-in speakers.
also try turning the microphone (or at least recording) off in a mixer
(alsa, gnome, etc).
i was playing around one-time seeing if i could get the microphone to
work. well, it appeared i couldn't get it to work (at least couldn't
get it to record and play back as described in some how-to), until i
gave up for the night and closed the lid. WOWSER! the feedback is
terrifying (especially for the first time late at night in complete
silence). i never got recording with the microphone working (but didn't
try all that hard, honestly), but i learned that if i messed with the
microphone, then don't be surprised by the feedback.
