You'll want to look at the full details at http://www.alsa-project.org, but
in short, no, you don't need any of the OSS sound drivers in the kernel. And
as was already pointed out, ALSA is a replacement for the OSS drivers. Most
audio applications (xmms, esound, arts, etc) have ALSA compatibility either
built in or available as an add-on, so depending on your application, you may
not need the ALSA OSS compatibility stuff at all. They are close to a 1.0
release for the ALSA code, so I'm not sure how much the API is still
changing. I would imagine most of it is stable, but who knows. I've been
using it for a number of years now (3 I think) without too much trouble.
