lphdisk and stndalhd will only operate on a partition marked 'a0' which
is listed as Thinkpad Hibernation. I've tried with several types for
FAT. However, with /dev/hda4 toggled to type 'a0', both utilities find
the partition and format it with no errors mentioned.

Here is my disk setup:

Disk /dev/hda: 240 heads, 63 sectors, 2584 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1             1       431   3258328+  1b  Hidden Win95 FAT32  <= Windows 2000
/dev/hda2   *       432       504    551880    b  Win95 FAT32         <= Windows 98
/dev/hda3           578      2584  15172920    f  Win95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda4           505       576    544320   a0  IBM Thinkpad hibernation
/dev/hda5           578      1254   5118088+  83  Linux               <= root
/dev/hda6          1255      1324    529168+  82  Linux swap
/dev/hda7          1325      1469   1096168+  83  Linux               <= home
/dev/hda8          1470      2584   8429368+   b  Win95 FAT32         <= data and storage

Partition table entries are not in disk order

Lilo is installed in the MBR. There is a hiberfil.sys file on the Windows 2000 partition, put there by the recovery CD IBM suppplied with the Thinkpad.

Fn+F12 and tpctl --H both don't hibernate, but give a low beep sound.
 Fn+F4 does suspend.
tpctl --H also gives this message:

tpctl: SMAPI BIOS error 0x91 ("system is invalid") -- exiting

Does hibernation work for you? Which laptop do you have? How is your
partition set up? What distribution are you using?

Thanks in advance,
Bret
