graphical mode to start automatically when I power on the system...

In RH 6.1 running "Xconfigurator" allows you to deselect the "Use Graphical Login" 
option.

You will probably have to re-specify (or at least confirm) your Video Card and Monitor 
settings. You then get the text-mode login and the command "startx" will fire-up 
Gnome if and when you want it.
