My sympathies - I have a co-worker who is blind and a master of all
things electronic (he's really quite amazing - he even does his own
soldering) but from time to time I have to eyeball things for him.
Especially the odd graphics oriented site.

You didn't say what version of Thinkpad you have. Here's a link to
a page labelled:

  TP 570/E, 600/E/X, 770/E/ED/X/Z, A2*, A30, T2*, X2*,
TransNote - Configuration Utility for DOS

  http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-4ZFPEG.html

I don't know what OS you were using. The parent page is:

I know this is a check/egg issue, but sometimes I've clued into
problems using tpctl. It let me know that my com port wasn't enabled
or on. (In my case it was disabled due to conflicts.)

You can also try:

   PS2 ? IRQ

   and

   PS2 ? DMA

That will draw out a graph showing what's on what channel. If you can
parse it, it should help you discover any conflicts if they're IRQ or
DMA based.

I have a TP 770E if that help (ie. if you have a 770 and have specific
questions, feel free to send them my way. I don't know if I can help,
but I'll try.)

Good luck,

Adam Benjamin
