Thats quite puzzling. I have seen that a few times on my desktop systems.
The message is pretty much as you see, linux is having problems talking to
the harddisk.

Ways I have solved it for desktop systems

1) Replace IBM platter hard drives with ones that don't fail! (Had 3 fails
so far), only one left in any system, and I will not rebuy IBM. I don't
know if IBM use glass platters in they notebook harddisks.. but you
already tried replacing it, so thats not the problem.

2) Update linux kernel to one that understands my harddisk controller
better.

3) Poor quality cables, Some people fit and use old style ribbon cables in
machines (like dell) Use the UDMA cables, gets ones rated for the UDMA
speed you want to use, don;t use a longer one rated for a lower UDMA
speed, make your machine layout work for the length of cable....

Ok, how does this relate to you? At a guess I would recon you have a cable
problem. If you still in warrenty take it to IBM support (They are
normally pretty dam good, its one reason for buying IBM). If your machine
is not in warrenty, you could open it and check if they other end of the
cable is loose.

Personally, if its beyond changing the harddisk and ram I would RMA it to
IBM. Yup its the more costly option, but you will get a working machine
back! Anything else is just a stab in the dark.
