[ltp] Thinkpad 770X (9549-71U) display shift?

I've got a 770X (9549-71U, 1024x768 display, Trident Cyber 9397DVD) with
Redhat 7.3 on it with the XFree86-4.2.0-8 X packages.  I notice that when
I first start up X or when I switch resolutions, the display is shifted a
few pixels to the left.  A few pixels on the right side are black and a
few pixels on the left side are off the screen.

Has anyone else noticed this?  How can I fix it permanently?  I
notice that if I hit Fn-F8, the screen recenters itself properly - but why
isn't the screen centered in the first place?
