Hello, list!
My TP600E is 3 1/2 years old now, well outside warranty, and heavily
used, hence I must begin to expect a few problems.
I've not had any problems with the X server or screen since I started
using the machine, up to a few days ago. When resuming from suspend,
instead of getting my screen image back, I instead got a blank screen,
backlight on, which appeared to "beat" on and off every 1-2 seconds, and
getting increasingly bright (greenish, mostly in the centre of the top
edge and later in the lower half of the screen) with every beat.
I re-suspended the machine and pulled out the AC power and battery
(ReadySafe is good for you), reconnected and powered the machine on,
and this time it woke up with no further problem.
Then yesterday I had an X server crash while out of the office. No
warning or indication of what went wrong. Command line at your service
:-) Restarting X went without incident.
Today when resuming, I got the "melting screen effect again", and once
more I pulled the power, but this time the machine reported only 64 MB
of memory (out of the 128 MB installed) and gave me an error 00195. IBM
tech support informed me that this was a memory error and suggested I
pull out and re-seat the memory chips.
Which I did.
... and when I powered the machine back up, it resumed without incident.
(ReadySafe is *so* good for you!)
So far, I'm reasonably happy.
Now, could this memory glitch (which I've obviously had) be the cause of
the melting screen effect and the X server crash?
Maybe others who have experienced this effect could also be advised to
re-seat their memory? Just a thought.
Best regards,
