I finally got around to trying this and did get sound, although playback 
appears to be at a rate of less than 1/2 of expected.

Looking around the web again, I see that IBM specifies dma2 for this 
machine to be "0" instead of "3." Changing dma2=0 for the 600e results in 
no change, although rmmod cs4232 followed by modprobe 4232 corrects the 
problem. (Another IBM suggestion)

In summary, the drivers "sb" and "cs4232" do appear to work with some 
tweaking.
