Try the system logs in /var/log/messages and by using "dmesg" for more
information. The mwave requires kernel modules to work correctly. Did you
build those? (This might not be the cause of your error, but it's a place
to start.)
If the modem is starting up properly, you should see stuff like this in
your system logs:
Oct 21 07:32:03 tycho mwave: Using
/lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/char/mwave/mwave.o
Oct 21 07:32:03 tycho kernel: ttyS01 at port 0x02f8
(irq = 3) is a 16550A
Oct 21 07:32:04 tycho mwave: mwave modem, initializing
mwave manager...OK
Oct 21 07:32:04 tycho mwave: mwave modem, initializing
modem specific code...OK
Oct 21 07:32:04 tycho mwave: mwave modem, getting
configured startup speed...64000.
Oct 21 07:32:04 tycho mwave: mwave modem, checking
configured speed...OK
Oct 21 07:32:04 tycho mwave: mwave modem, setting
modem speed...OK
Oct 21 07:32:05 tycho mwave: mwave modem, loading modem
DSP...OK.
Oct 21 07:32:05 tycho mwave: mwave modem STARTED. To setup
serial port use: 'setserial
/dev/ttySx autoconfig'
Oct 21 07:32:06 tycho mwave: /dev/ttyS1, UART: 16550A,
Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3

If he's got a 600 as he said in his previous posts, he's using the right
drivers. The original 600 comes with an mwave.
