[ltp] Can't get XF86Config to work - suggestions?

I have an old 360Cs laptop with Debian 3.0 running on it. Everything
configured nicely, it's on the Internet via Cable modem and everything. The
only thing that didn't work was the display in X.
What is the most basic XF86Config that should work on ANY system? I've
tried so many combinations from the MAN files and from scouring the web, but
nothing seems to work.
Also, should I be changing settings in another config file that I am
missing? Is there anything else that needs to be configured? I though
xf86cfg would have taken care of this.
Thanks for any tips!
