Huzzah! Things I know about...

you want to run hdparm -d1 /dev/hda
Run hdparm -tT /dev hda before and after to see the increase in hard-disk reads.

First, use 'free' to find out how much memory you are using, and 'top' to find out what the resource hogs are.
If you're running KDE or GNOME, stop it. Switch to blackbox or another window manager based around being small.

Again, check 'free' -- and see how much RAM you actually use. It may be you never _touch_ the swap partition.
