The 40M of RAM will be a problem if you want to run stuff like Open Office
no matter what distribution you choose. For a machine of that age, I might
try Slackware or Debian and avoid the KDE or Gnome desktop environments. 
Neither will perform acceptably in 40M RAM.

Having said that, I have somewhere a 701c with Red Hat 7.2 on it ... :)
