You can play CDs on that machine without any drivers loaded at all.  You
won't be able to play anything else except the system beep until you
configure the card and load some drivers.

Not having any sound drivers loaded might not be your problem, but it's
the most likely cause of the symptoms you describe (CD playing works, but
other sounds don't).
