That sounds like the problem I had with my T40p (with 1.5GB RAM
installed). I found the solution to it in this article:

My T40p would only work if I had the ethernet disabled and PCMCIA didn't
work at all. Doing what that article said, all the problems went away
(using RH 9.0 with kernel 2.4.20-19.9+that patch)!
