Only one program can take the sound device at the same time.
If you want to enable several programs to output sound through
simultaneously, you will need a sound daemon such as
esound (http://www.tux.org/~ricdude/EsounD.html) - part of GNOME,
aRts (http://www.arts-project.org/) - part of KDE,
nas (http://radscan.com/nas.html),
rplay (http://rplay.doit.org/) or
Jack (http://jackit.sourceforge.net/).
I'd recommend nas or Jack.
Andre.
