For SuSE distribution you might want to see this:

http://www.suse.de/de/business/certifications/certified_hardware/notebook.html

there are some items about SuSE-certified IBM TP there.
What I know, in Germany there are some shops that sell some TP series (which are SuSE-compatible) together with SuSE distro (and even an additional CD for those laptops to help the user easier making dual boot system and so on).

I myself own TP R40e which only has ACPI in BIOS (no APM). It was struggling enough (at least for me) to make it works (but still not completely). Those with APM in BIOS perhaps have less problems regarding the power management.

And as the others also said, http://www.linux-laptop.net/ is also a nice site to start with.

Are there Thinkpad models that don't work well with Linux?

Is one flavor of Linux better than another?
