It appears that it works if "lspci -nv" identifies your modem thus:

00:1f.6 Class 0703: 8086:2486 (rev 01)
        Subsystem: 1014:0227

The rev probably does not matter (rev 02 has also been reported to
work).

It did NOT work for someone with this modem identification:

00:1f.6 Class 0703: 8086:2486 (rev 02)
        Subsystem: 1014:051a
