The modem in the Thinkpad 600 (and 600E, 770, and some others) is not as
dumb as a Winmodem. It actually has a hardware DSP, it just needs a
control program to load the DSP with the instructions it requires. The
difference is that it doesn't eat much CPU when the modem is in use,
unlike the typical Winmodem.
