driver 2.7.9-2.7.10: does not recognize the modem
2.7.14: fails exactly as you described
	also gives error message when loading module:

	"This driver is not compatible with the installed modem codec.
	 Please contact your modem provider for support."

2.8.1: Fails as you report. Also gives the same error message as 2.7.14.
