For a few weeks I had been getting strange floppy disk errors in the system
log (/var/log/messages).
Jul 8 16:39:18 localhost kernel: floppy0: unexpected interrupt
Jul 8 16:39:18 localhost kernel: floppy0: sensei repl[0]=c0 repl[1]=0
Jul 8 16:39:18 localhost kernel: floppy0: sensei repl[0]=c1 repl[1]=0
Jul 8 16:39:18 localhost kernel: floppy0: sensei repl[0]=c2 repl[1]=0
Jul 8 16:39:18 localhost kernel: floppy0: sensei repl[0]=c3 repl[1]=0
Jul 8 16:39:25 localhost kernel: floppy0: probe failed...
Jul 8 16:39:31 localhost last message repeated 15 times
Then, it finally dawned on me that this was a hardware problem. Doing a
careful examination and disassembly of the floppy, I found a loose scrap of
paper rattling around inside the mechanism. Removed said scrap with tweezers.
Problem solved.
