FWIW ...
Tex9 started an opensource project named xtunes. Apparently, it was an
excellent player and music organization application for xwindows. The
Sourceforge project for it, xtunes.sourceforge.net is still there but, is
just a pointer to the (defunct) Tex9 site. Tex9 created a plug-in for
xtunes that supported the iPod and were selling the plug-in.
Apple was unhappy with Tex9 using the xtunes name, since they felt it was
too similar to iTunes. Apple also felt that the xtunes interface had a
look and feel too similar to iTunes. Apple's lawyers sent the folks at
Tex9 a letter on the matter. Tex9 changed the name of the project to Sumi
and the name of the plug-in to SumiPod, modified the interface, and
indicated that this seemed to be okay with Apple. Tex9 made one more
release, after several months, including starting a new project on
sourceforge (sumi.sourceforge.net.)
When I first looked, the Tex9 site was still up and had a link to
Sourceforge to download Sumi. However, the Sourceforge project had no
downloads available and nothing in CVS. Email to the support address on
the Tex9 site bounced. Mail to the sales address went through but, I never
received any response.
I posted several inquiries to places like iPodlounge but, either no one had
any idea what ultimately happened or they didn't care.
Based on skimming iPod forums, it sounds like most people using iPods under
Linux are currently using ephPod under Wine.
I hope this isn't too off-topic.
