What version of wine are you using?
I'm using the following packages:
[tomalek@phobos tomalek]$ rpm -q wine kernel
wine-20030709-1rh9winehq
kernel-2.4.20-18.9
I used to have a problem similar to yours with wine starting until I
upgraded wine to the latest version available from www.winehq.com .

... to get the updated wine package.
I use wine mainly to run my old copy of Quicken 98. Still haven't quite
gotten the hang of GnuCash. :)
