You do *not* need to build a module from the sources supplied by IBM.
Modem support consists of two components: a "driver" and a "manager".
The driver is part of the kernel and allows communication with the
hardware. Usually it is built as a module. The manager is a
userspace program. It has to be running so long as the modem is
in use.
My advice is to use the driver that is supplied with the kernel
you are using. Use the latest manager available on IBM's website.
